The Resiliency Advantage book cover

by Jim Pawlak

"The Resiliency Advantage - Master Change, Thrive Under Pressure, and Bounce Back From Setbacks" by Al Siebert, Berrett-Koehler Publishers, Inc. With the workplace in a constant state of flux, you too often find yourself buried under a pile of shifting priorities and stop-that-do-this assignments. How you react to the today's uncertainty affects your tomorrow. Will you be an "I can't do anything about it" victim, or will you be an "I can make things happen" opportunist. Siebert has written a book for those who want to find the upside.

The Resiliency Quiz on pages 16-17 sets the stage by asking you to rate yourself (1 to 5 scale) on a number of statements and questions. It takes another step by requiring validation; two of your friends should rate you and discuss their ratings. This ensures an honest appraisal.

Working on resiliency starts with baby steps. Begin with two lists. The first is a list of five things that you "feel irritated, distressed or upset about". By each thing write down why it makes you feel that way - take your time when expressing these feelings. Now switch to the positive side. List five things that you feel good about and why you feel that way.

The rest of the book is built around looking for opportunities to increase the positive things and to find the positive in the negative experiences. For example: If one of your positive things is "you like to learn" and one of your negatives is "too much on your plate", the opportunist's alternative involves learning to manage priorities.
